Synopsis

EmmaCare is a compelling legal, medical, and corporate thriller that dives deep into the dark underbelly of the healthcare insurance industry. This thought-provoking novel tackles the consequences of prioritizing profit over people's health, unraveling a suspenseful story of greed, power, and redemption.

At the heart of the story is Katherine, a dedicated healthcare lawyer fired for her attempt to help patients access the care they desperately need.

When Luigi Mangione is arrested as the alleged shooter of a health insurance CEO, the tension sharpens, uncovering layers of deceit and corporate corruption. Katherine is pulled into the aftermath, joining a new company where she meets Dr. Ryan Great, a physician equally disillusioned with the system. Together, they uncover how deeply care can be compromised when profit comes first.

Readers are introduced to Doug, a healthcare executive whose life transforms after he's abducted. From his humble beginnings to amassing immense wealth, Doug must confront the dire consequences of his decisions and ask himself, "Can I make a difference?"

Drawing from her extensive background as a healthcare attorney, Schwartz explores the complex intersection of the healthcare system and the human cost of corporate greed. The novel empowers readers to understand the challenges faced when a system is stacked against the people it claims to serve. It inspires a call for change.

Told with nuance and emotional clarity, EmmaCare is a powerful story about what it means to do the right thing when the stakes are life itself.

"Emmacare is an absorbing legal and medical thriller for our times. I hope there is a sequel. Her characters are relatable, engaging and often surprising. In a twist from a typical work of fiction, the author helps us understand the timely underpinings of her book - why and how the healthcare insurance industry allows claims to be denied and delayed, causing serious outcomes for the consumer. As a provider I have seen and worked with families for whom the repercussions have been tragic, and have experienced a different side of the equation - the difficulties trying to get paid for providing services from the same system. The author utilizes her story telling skills to go beyond what one might expect and proposes some potential solutions to the quandary - how to improve and fix the healthcare insurance industry."

"Against the backdrop of mounting frustrations for millions of Americans seeking affordable healthcare dominated by an industry whose bottom line is profit not patients' well being, this book draws the reader into the journey of one courageous women with a conscience whose willingness to challenge the big guns of the industry places her square in the middle of the kidnapping of a medical industry chief executive and the manhunt that ensues. It captivated me from page one as I'm sure it will anyone whose felt like a beleaguered David taking on the Goliath of the Medical Industrial Complex."

"This novel pulls back the curtain on how healthcare decisions affect real people. The tension builds quickly and never really lets up. Katherine’s situation feels frustratingly believable. The ethical questions linger long after the last page."

Excerpt

“Katherine, your employment is terminated effective immediately.” Katherine met the cold eyes of the General Counsel of a large healthcare company, her pulse steady. No surprise, no anger. Just inevitability. She tilted her head slightly, considering him. “At least I got out of this company alive.”

Something in his eyes changed, never expecting those words. He said nothing. She turned once, just long enough to see an expression of shock on his face, then walked out with calm precision. This wasn’t a loss.

This was a gift.

The moment she stepped outside, the New York City air cool against her skin, she pulled out her phone and called Rachel Brady, her best friend since they were five.

“Can you believe I got fired for actually helping people access the care that should be covered by their insurance?”

“Of course I can. You were costing them money. Move on, my friend.”

Katherine exhaled, a small, sharp laugh escaping her lips. She already had.

Two weeks later, Mitchell Stone, CEO of BestLife Health, sat in his sprawling executive suite encompassing the thirtieth floor of yet another forgettable glass tower in Midtown Manhattan. The office was pristine, impersonal, an expanse of polished wood, leather furniture, and floor‑to‑ceiling windows that framed the City like a conquest. Not a single family photo, no personal clutter. Just power, arranged perfectly.

His assistant ushered Katherine inside with a perfunctory nod before slipping away.

Mitch watched as Katherine approached, her posture straight, her steps measured. Most who entered his office were easy to read, their deference automatic, a flicker of awe or intimidation in their eyes. But not her. Katherine’s gaze held his without hesitation, her expression unreadable. No fidgeting, no pleasantries.

And he had to admit, she was very attractive, indeed.

He stood, extending his hand as she approached his desk. Her grip was firm, unhurried. She sat down in the tall dark‑brown leather chair across from him.

“I understand you’re interested in the Senior Attorney position. We’ve done our due diligence. Your former employer described you as a relentless advocate for members, appropriately seeking approvals of their healthcare claims. Would you say that’s accurate?”

“Yes, it is.”

“We’d like to hire you.”

He leaned back slightly, watching for a reaction. None came. “I assume you can start immediately.”

“Yes, I can.”

“Good, then it’s done.”

He tapped a pen against the desk, as if testing her.

“It’s Friday so employment begins Monday. You will not be reporting to the General Counsel. All issues will come directly to me.”

Katherine gave a single nod, then rose. “Understood.”

She turned and walked out without hesitation. Mitch watched her go, his brow creasing slightly. He had expected at least a hint of satisfaction, some sign of the typical corporate hunger. But there had been nothing, just a steady, unwavering control.
